Unwanted pop-ups can severely hamper your productivity, forcing you to close multiple windows and dialog boxes every time you want to load a new Web page. Pop-ups are automatically generated advertisements that appear in a new browser window or tab as you use the Web. You should always attempt to investigate the cause of pop-ups, as they can be a sign of a virus infection on your computer.
Browser Pop-Up Blocker
A pop-up blocker is a browser function that prevents pop-up tabs and windows from opening. Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox all come with built-in pop-up blockers that can be activated through their respective option menus. Alternatively, you could use a third-party browser plugin such as Adblock Plus. With pop-up blocking activated, a browser only displays tabs that the user has requested rather than auto-generated pages. However, there are ways that sites can circumvent browser-based pop-up blocking, and a pop-up blocker cannot always stop virus-generated pop-ups.
Ad-Blocking Software
Ad-blocking software performs a similar task to your browser's pop-up blocker but runs as a separate application rather than a part of the browser itself. As such, you can think of an ad blocker as a kind of extra layer of defense against pop-ups. Blocking software can vary widely in scope and features. Many such programs, such as Adblock Pro and Super Ad Blocker (links in Resources), can also block the ads on a Web page itself as well as ads that appear in a separate tab.
Malware Scan
If you get pop-ups on all the sites you visit, you should run a malware scan, as you may have adware on your computer. Adware is a form of virus that generates ads on your computer. Most major antivirus programs, such as McAfee and Norton offer some form of adware protection. However, for best results, you should download and run a dedicated adware scanner such as Adware Cleaner or Adware Away (links in Resources), as the programs are specifically designed to eliminate the effects of adware.
Review Security
Once you have identified and eliminated the source of any pop-ups, you should remain vigilant to ensure that the problem does not reappear. Standard anti-virus user procedures such as not opening suspicious emails and restricting browsing to known sites can be useful here. In addition, you should ensure that your computer is running firewall software that is kept up to date. Firewall software protects your computer from network-based threats, helping you to stop adware programs from reappearing on your computer.

Sorry, the comment line is wrong - should be Ctrl-Alt-Shift-F9

FYI, you need to have more than one sheet in your workbook for this to work. Otherwise, the formula will display the filename but no sheet name.
Good Day, Thank you for your comment. I have tested the formula in a workbook that has only one sheet, but everything was running smoothly. The formula only displays the sheet name no matter how many worksheets existing in a workbook.

Hi, using the =MID(CELL('filename',A1),FIND(']',CELL('filename',A1))+1,255) formula in desktop excel works, but not in online excel.. can you explain why that is?it returns #value error in the cell. is there a workaround for this? Thanks!
You are a champ! Nothing like a fix that one can copy and paste and have it work. Thank you.

Using the VBA macro, if I change the tab name the value in the cell does not get updated. Am I doing something wrong?
Of course nothing's ever simple with Microsoft products is it? My solution actually breaks it, because it means everywhere you use the function it gets the name of the sheet where the last change was made, not the name of the sheet where the function is used.

Function TabName() 'Need to make it volatile otherwise it is never recalculated unless we do Ctrl-Shift-F9 Application.Volatile TabName = ActiveSheet.Name End Function

Dear John, for best example let me tell you one thing. if you want to change your code will be like this. Function John() John = ActiveSheet.Name End Function

Dear John, The formula can't update automatically. You need to refresh the formula manually after changing the tab name. Sorry about that.
Refresh all formulas using the replace tool. Highlight everything, Find '=' (no quotes), Replace with '=' (no quotes). Nothing actually changes but every formula is reloaded.
